Kara Chad is going to the Olympics.

On Thursday, the 20-year-old Calgarian was named as the reserve rider for the Canadian show-jumping team that will be competing next month in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Chad is coming off a hugely successful Spruce Meadows Summer Series in Calgary, where she and her Olympic horse Bellinda finished in second place in the 1.55-metre Scotia Bank Cup and sixth place in the 1.60-metre RBC Grand Prix. She is currently competing on the Canadian Nations Cup team at the World Equestrian Festival in Aachen, Germany.

Chad will be joined by some of the biggest stars in Canadian equestrian sport, including Eric Lamaze, Tiffany Foster, Yann Candele and Amy Millar. Ten-time Olympian Ian Millar will not be part of the team, as he doesn’t have a horse healthy enough to compete in such a high-level and challenging competition.
